Carl was an extremely talented woodworker.  He was in demand for his old-school workmanship in renovations and for his fine work in exotic materials.  Carl didn’t brag but, clearly, he was proud of his three daughters’ achievements and their academic success as high as PhD.  Outgoing and sociable, Carl made many good friends in the Port Carling / Bracebridge area where he was known as “the big guy on Brandy Lake.  Carl valued his old friends and kept in contact with many from as far back as elementary school.  He was always “there” for anyone that needed help.  A true friend missed by many.

Marlene Berney Mckinnon

1998

1957-1961

Marlene Berney was a excellent student, completing 5 years of high school in 4 years through an enrichment program at Northview. She was a dedicated school teacher at the elementary and junior high levels up until her retirement. Shortly after leaving teaching with many plans to continue enriching her life and those of her family, friends and community, she died suddenly following surgery. Marlene was strong and determined, bright and knowledgeable and so kind, generous and compassionate. She was my best friend from grade 4 on and along with her loving family, I cherish her memory and am grateful for her presence in my life.

Lynn Smith Stellini

Keith McLean

1974

Keith attended Northview in the early to mid 60\'s.  He was a great guy with lots of talent and a super sense of humour.  It was difficult being Keith in 1963 as he was the only black student in the school that had a population of about 1200.  I think of him often.

After leaving Northview, Keith did Business Administration at Ryerson, and after graduation was hired by IBM. He did well and had just taken a promotion to Assistant Manager of their office in Hamilton when he was killed in a car accident on May 12, 1974. In addition to being a good athlete, Keith was a fine musician and I and several others from Northview often jammed with him. His dad was Cy McLean, a well liked jazz pianist on the Toronto nightclub scene; his mom Gladys worked at the Willowdale post office. He was an only child, and his death was a tremendous tragedy for his parents.

Keith had a wide circle of friends; I heard his funeral procession was a mile and a half long. I was at law school in Vancouver when he died, and it wasn’t until a hot July day eight years later when I finally arrived at his grave in York Cemetery. There was no one around, and I found myself face down, prone on top of his grave sobbing out my grief - closest I could get to him. Such was the impact he had on those he touched.

Cor Vandenberg

2006

1971-1995

It is with deep sadness that I must tell you that my husband, Cornelis Vandenberg, passed away this past August (in 2006). He would have loved to join you at the reunion for he enjoyed teaching math at Northview Heights S.S. from 1971 until his retirement in 1995. As some of you may remember, Cor was a school representative for OSSTF and he was strike captain during the big teacher’s strike of the 1980’s. He liked teaching math to his ESL classes in particular and taking them on outdoor field trips.  Cor had not been well for the last five years. He had also recently been diagnosed with cancer.  Nevertheless, his death due to a massive blood poisoning (sepsis) came unexpectedly.  We would like to thank his Northview colleagues and his students for their support and fellowship during Cor’s teaching years at Northview Heights S.S.  His was a life well lived that had to end too soon.

Karen Thomas Verway

At Northview, Karen played french horn, liked Mr Adam's math class, and left after Grade 12 to marry her sweetheart, Art, and to work at Bell.  They had 2 beautiful children, Mark and Michelle, who are now at university.  Karen was sick most of her adult life but was a happy, positive person who followed her dreams -- "Disneyworld here we come!" among others! Karen was a great student who was soft spoken and well-liked by her peers and teachers at Northview.  She struggled with illness most of her adult life, and died from stomach cancer at the age of 38.  She died at 38 but she packed everything she could into those 38 years.  She was a great sister, and she continues to provide strength to those who loved her. She was a true and honest friend and all who knew her miss her still.
